Chipotle Is Closing All ShopHouse Asian Kitchen Locations

Chipotle Is Closing All ShopHouse Asian Kitchen Locations

The first ShopHouse location opened in 2011

ShopHouse’s menu consisted of customizable rice, noodle, and salad bowls.

On Wednesday, March 9, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. announced that it will close all 15 locations of ShopHouse Asian Kitchen in Maryland, Illinois, California, and Washington, D.C., effective March 17.

According to Nation’s Restaurant News, the company plans to sell the leases of each restaurant location. Chris Arnold, company spokesman, told NRN in an email that the company believes the move is “the right decision at this time.”

Arnold says that any current ShopHouse employees will be offered employment at Chipotle and will also be paid for an additional week after the closing.

The company’s decision to close the shop follows a series of food safety scandals and decline in sales, Eater reported.

Despite the end of ShopHouse, Chipotle still has two additional fast-casual concepts running: Tasty Made, a burger restaurant based in Ohio, and Pizzeria Locale, which has expanded to seven locations.

Hey, Chipotle, Maybe Dumping ShopHouse Was a Mistake

Shares of Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE:CMG) were slammed on Tuesday following reports of a food-borne illness outbreak, and on Wednesday morning, it was time for Wall Street pros to follow suit. Analysts at Wells Fargo and BMO Capital went on to downgrade the former fast-casual bellwether.

Robert Derrington at Telsey Advisory went the other way, approaching the fear-fueled sell-off as a buying opportunity. He's boosting his rating from perform to outperform, but he's been the exception to the rule. Most of the market is now bracing for a setback similar to late 2015, when several food-borne illness outbreaks creamed the stock.

Chipotle got rid of ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen earlier this year, and it's been slow to develop its Pizzeria Locale concept. Having one or two needle-moving chains beyond Chipotle would've come in handy right now when its namesake eatery is dealing with another reputational attack.
